Brainstorming Meeting on Industry Based Training System in Construction Sector
On 28 November 2016, Sudokkho organised a brainstorming meeting with its stakeholders representing the government, development partners, industry-input supplies, industry-contractors, industry-developers, and skills training providers to explore points of access for Sudokkho to promote Industry Based Training (IBT) systems within the construction sector.
It is very crucial to understand the situation on the ground within the Bangladeshi business culture before going ahead with such initiatives. As such, the meeting covered some major concerns such as the best practices in engaging industry in training, how does industries link to existing training centres and value trained construction workers, motivational factors for industries to invest in training; and the training models that would work.
Sudokkho’s approach to Industry Based Training (IBT) component is to provide technical assistance to setup training systems that are owned and managed by the industry. It’s support buys-down the risk of identifying and operating skills training and employment initiatives that can have a sector-wide impact and are innovative training systems, different compared to traditional training approaches. The focus of Sudokkho’s contribution is on the development of training systems and to capacitate its implementers and eventually individual IBT projects should have an outreach beyond that of a single employer, and be applicable to a wider scale within the sector.
It was a very interesting and fruitful meeting held in the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Dhaka, where the speakers talked about the existing challenges in the construction sector and suggesting possible way-outs in the long run. Among the participants were CEO of NSDC Secretariat, ABM Khorshed Alam, CEO of UCEP, Zaki Hasan, President of BACI, Engineer Aftabuddin Ahmed, Director of CISC, Engineer Anisuzzaman Bhuiyan Rana, Chairperson of CISC Engineer Shafiqul Alam Bhuiyan, President of BRMCA, Engineer MA Awal, CEO of Montage Training and Certification (Bangladesh), Sirajul Amin, Décor Manager, Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd, Fatema Baqui, Director of Development Contracts, British Council Bangladesh, Louise Cowcher and sector experts from Sudokkho Belayet Hossain and Alastiar Machin.
